Katrina Victims Will Need Our Help!

"When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his throne in heavenly glory.

All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats.

He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left.

Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world.

For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in,

I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’

"Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink?

When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you?

When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’

"The King will reply, ‘I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.’

"Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.

For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink,

I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.’

"They also will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?’

"He will reply, ‘I tell you the truth, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.’

"Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life."

We should be praying for people in New Orleans

Ezekiel 13:13 "‘Therefore this is what the Sovereign LORD says: In my wrath I will unleash a violent wind, and in my anger hailstones and torrents of rain will fall with destructive fury."

Genesis 18:32 "Then he said,'May the Lord not be angry, but let me speak just once more. What if only ten can be found there?' He answered, 'For the sake of ten, I will not destroy it."

Psalms 55:8 "I would hurry to my place of shelter, far from the tempest and storm."

Proverbs 10:25 "When the storm has swept by, the wicked are gone, but the righteous stand firm forever."

Matthew 7:24-27 "Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash."

Nahum 1:3 "The LORD is slow to anger and great in power; the LORD will not leave the guilty unpunished. His way is in the whirlwind and the storm, and clouds are the dust of his feet."

2 Peter 2:9 "...the Lord knows how to rescue godly men from trials and to hold the unrighteous for the day of judgment, while continuing their punishment."

James 5:16-18 "...The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective. Elijah was a man just like us. He prayed earnestly that it would not rain, and it did not rain on the land for three and a half years. Again he prayed, and the heavens gave rain, and the earth produced its crops."

Are you praying for the people of New Orleans?

5 Steps To Take Refuge In God (Psalm 37)

Psalms 37:40 says, "The Lord helps them and delivers them; he delivers them from the wicked and saves them, because they take refuge in him."

We all need delivered at times. We all face wicked people who would like to kill us. We all face dangerous threats in this evil, fallen world. Therefore, we are all tempted to worry, lose hope, follow our own path, and act rashly in anger. By the foolishness of others, we are tempted to be fools. We all face trouble. Psalms 37:39 says, "The salvation of the righteous comes from the LORD; he is their stronghold in time of trouble." By the short term success of the wicked, we can lose faith and be tempted to respond sinfully.

God's word has some advice to help us abstain from foolish wickedness and walk in an upright path of blessings. Psalm 37 gives us five steps to "take refuge" in the Lord. As you face your challenges and fears, take refuge in the Lord.

Step #1: Do not fret because of evil men

Why shouldn't we worry when the evil man seems to be succeeding in his evil ways? Because it won’t last. God says in Psalms 37:2, "For like the grass they will soon wither, like green plants they will soon die away." I have noticed that along the bank of the creek near my home, where the farmers don't mow, the grass and weeds grow up quickly in the spring and grow to a very tall height. But in the fall and winter this grass quickly fades. What was the height of a small tree is now quickly gone.

As quickly as the flowers of the field bloom, they fade. So it is with the seeming success of the wicked. Psalms 37:10 says, "A little while, and the wicked will be no more; though you look for them, they will not be found." Where is Hitler? Where is Stalin? So it will be with Osama Bin Laden.

Psalms 37:35 says, "I have seen a wicked and ruthless man flourishing like a green tree in it's native soil, but he soon passed away and was no more; thought I looked for him, he could not be found." Whether a ruthless killer like Osama, a unjust judge, a crooked politician, a corrupt police officer, an abusive boss or a neighborhood bully, don't fret. They won’t last!

Step #2: Trust in the Lord and do good

Psalms 37:4 says, "Delight yourself in the lord and he will give you the desires of your heart." When your desires are bound up in the Lord, and you trust in His word and do good, His dreams become your dreams and the vision of the future you share with God becomes reality because your will has matured to be the same as His will. Then he can bless you give you your desires.

A woman is not happy in her marriage, so she is tempted to divorce her husband. She thinks that only when she sins and divorces her husband can she be happy. That is a lie. She is afraid, if she stays with her husband as God commands that she will be unhappy. Who will she trust? Will she trust in the Lord and do good by obeying His command not to divorce her husband? Or will she turn to sin and divorce her husband, chasing after what she thinks will make her happy? When faced with a trial or temptation, the question is always, will we trust in the Lord and do good, or trust our lusts and do evil.

Psalms 37:27 says, "Turn from evil and do good; then you will dwell in the land forever." We prosper by doing good not evil. We have to trust in God's Word, even when we don't see how things will work out in our favor. In fact, it would be better to have an unhappy marriage and be right with God, than to have a peaceful marriage and living sinfully away from God. It is better to be poor and do the right thing, than sin and become rich. Never forsake eternal heavenly blessings for temporary earthly possessions. Psalms 37:16-17 says, "Better the little that the righteous have then the wealth of many wicked; for the power of the wicked will be broken, but the Lord upholds the righteous."

When you don't trust in God and do good, but trust in lust and do evil, your happiness cannot last. It fades quickly and never really satisfies. Wickedness brings a blessing that withers. Righteousness brings an unfading joy. Psalms 37:18-20 says, "The days of the blameless are known to the LORD, and their inheritance will endure forever. In times of disaster they will not wither; in days of famine they will enjoy plenty. But the wicked will perish: The Lord’s enemies will be like the beauty of the fields, they will vanish— vanish like smoke." The righteous are blessed even during hard times. The wicked suddenly vanish. Trust in God.

Step #3 Commit your way to the Lord

Psalms 37:30-31 says, "The mouth of the righteous man utters wisdom, and his tongue speaks what is just. The law of his God is in his heart; his feet do not slip." God's direction must become our direction, and then we will not slip and fall. We must stop going our way. We must stop trying to force our will. We must commit to the Lord the direction of our lives and allow him to guide us through the desert of life by the light of His Word. It is the word of God in our hearts that protects our path.

Psalms 37:6 says, "He will make your righteousness shine like the dawn, the justice of your cause like the noonday sun." When you follow the light of God's Word and His will illuminates your path, your life will shine in this dark world. When you have committed your way to the Lord's way, you will stand in stark contrast to the wicked. Psalms 37:21 says, "The wicked borrow and do not repay, but the righteous give generously." The wicked take, the righteous give. Psalms 37:32 "The wicked lie in wait for the righteous, seeking their very lives." And Psalms 37:37 says, "Consider the blameless, observe the upright; there is a future for the man of peace." The wicked plot murder, the righteous seek peace. There is a major difference in the way of the wicked and righteous. We must commit our way to the Lord, not our own lusts.

Step #4 Be still before the Lord

Psalms 37:7 says, "...Wait patiently for him; do not fret when men succeed in their ways, when they carry out their wicked schemes." It seems some times like the wicked will succeed. It seems the wicked are winning sometimes. But we need to view things from an eternal perspective. When we do, we will be patient before God and wait for him to work things out. In contrast, when we have a limited view of things and focus only on the present state of affairs, we can lose faith and run ahead of God.

We need to trust in the ultimate justice that God will bring about and in the conclusion he has foretold. When we trust in that, we can be still before Him and wait for Him to take vengeance in His time rather than run ahead of God and try to take vengeance ourselves or fix the problem with our own sinful actions. Psalms 37:9 "For evil men will be cut off, but those who hope in the LORD will inherit the land." When we operate on hope, we wait patiently for what God has promised. That is what hope is. It is the confident expectation of God's promises to come to pass, which causes us to wait patiently for them.

Psalms 37:34 says, "Wait for the LORD and keep his way. He will exalt you to inherit the land; when the wicked are cut off, you will see it." Our patiently waiting on the Lord is essential to receiving his blessing. We must be still and wait on HIs promises. We often want to fix all our problems ourselves. We do something to make what we want come to pass, but sometimes what God wants us to do is just be still and trust him while waiting on his timing.

Step #5 Refrain from Anger and turn from wrath

Those who are wicked are full of rage and anger. Psalms 37:12 says, "The wicked plot against the righteous and gnash their teeth at them." Notice that the wicked are those who gnash their teeth in anger. The righteous will let go of their anger. And why are we tempted to get angry? Isn't it because we are up set with the outcome. If we were truly trusting in God to give us blessings and justice, we wouldn't be angry at people who are wicked, we would feel sorry for them.

Psalms 37:8 says, "...turn from wrath; do not fret— it leads only to evil." Notice that anger and fretting (worry) are related. It's because you are worried that the wicked will win and get away with their schemes that you are angry. If you trust in God to work all things out, you won’t struggle with anger. Holding on to wrath instead of letting go of anger is related to a lack of trust in God's justice. It’s the person who feels that they are losing who gets angry. But we must wait on him and not worry ourselves into a rage.

Five steps to take refuge in God during times of trouble:

#1: Do not fret because of evil men

#2: Trust in the Lord and do good

#3 Commit your way to the Lord

#4 Be still before the Lord

#5 Refrain from anger and turn from wrath

Prejudice Is Rebellion Against God

There is a sin that is not often discussed, but it is at the root of so many other sins. That sin is rebellion. I loved the movie REBEL WITHOUT A CAUSE staring James Dean. It traces the story of three teen characters and shows that the reason they rebelled was the poor parenting in the home. There are reasons we rebel against God and against those God places over us or sends to rebuke us.

We can see the reasons by studying and learning from people in the Bible who rebelled. Hebrews 3:15 says, “As has just been said: ‘Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as you did in the rebellion.’ Who were they who heard and rebelled? Were they not all those Moses led out of Egypt?” The most famous bunch of rebels were the Israelites as they followed Moses out of Egypt. 1 Corinthians 10:10-11 says of them, “And do not grumble, as some of them did— and were killed by the destroying angel. These things happened to them as examples and were written down as warnings for us, on whom the fulfillment of the ages has come.” Their physical reality is an analogy of our spiritual reality. Their story was written as a warning and example of what not to do.

Why did they rebel? One reason is prejudice. Aaron was Moses’ older brother and chosen by God to be high priest over Israel. Miriam was Moses’ older sister, who helped save him as a baby and who led all the Israelite women in a glorious victory dance after the Egyptians were totally drowned in the sea. They were people who God had inspired and who had done great things for God. But even godly people can rebel against Him when they give in to prejudice.

Numbers 12:1-3 says, “Miriam and Aaron began to talk against Moses because of his Cushite wife, for he had married a Cushite. ‘Has the LORD spoken only through Moses?’ they asked. ‘Hasn’t he also spoken through us?’ And the LORD heard this. (Now Moses was a very humble man, more humble than anyone else on the face of the earth.)”

Moses was humble. They had no reason to rebel against him. The land of Cush, from which Cushites came, was Ethiopia. Ancient historians also record that Moses had at one point married a black woman from Ethiopia. Miriam and Aaron didn't say that was why they were talking against him, but the Bible tells us that was the real reason. They were prejudice against Moses’ black wife. Lesson: Never condemn someone's interracial marriage.

Prejudice is an ungodly thing. Why? Because God shows no favoritism. Acts 10:34-35 declares “Then Peter began to speak: "I now realize how true it is that God does not show favoritism but accepts men from every nation who fear him and do what is right.” When you commit the ungodly act of prejudice, you bring consequences upon yourself.

We are told the rebellion of Aaron and Miriam is one example for us on whom the fulfillment of the ages has come. Prejudice brings God's judgment. Numbers 12:4-5 says, “At once the LORD said to Moses, Aaron and Miriam, 'Come out to the Tent of Meeting, all three of you.' So the three of them came out. Then the LORD came down in a pillar of cloud; he stood at the entrance to the Tent and summoned Aaron and Miriam.” Remember when you were called before your parents as a child because they found out about something you did? Remember the fear? Imagine standing before an angry God.

Prejudice will still bring God's judgment today. James 2:8-9 “If you really keep the royal law found in Scripture, 'Love your neighbor as yourself,' you are doing right. But if you show favoritism, you sin and are convicted by the law as lawbreakers.” If you show favoritism, you will stand before God and be convicted.

God took this sin personally. When they attacked Moses out of prejudice they attacked a man faithful in all God's house. They attacked God's spokesman. They attacked God's word. Numbers 12:6-8 says, "Listen to my words: "When a prophet of the LORD is among you, I reveal myself to him in visions, I speak to him in dreams. But this is not true of my servant Moses; he is faithful in all my house. With him I speak face to face, clearly and not in riddles; he sees the form of the LORD. Why then were you not afraid to speak against my servant Moses?" Basically God says, "How dare you!"

When we reject God's spokesman due to our own ideas, prejudices, and philosophies, we reject God. Jesus said to his disciples in Luke 10:16 "He who listens to you listens to me; he who rejects you rejects me; but he who rejects me rejects him who sent me." To reject the apostle’s doctrine because you are prejudice against his chosen messenger is to reject Him. 1 Thessalonians 4:8 says, “Therefore, he who rejects this instruction does not reject man but God, who gives you his Holy Spirit.” You are rejecting the Holy Spirit when you ignore the teaching of His Word via his messengers. How many people have not listened to God's Word due to prejudices against the speakers or some other foolish opinion based reason.

Not only will it bring judgment and rejection of God's word, prejudice rebellion brings an end to fellowship with God and his people. Numbers 12:9-12 says, “The anger of the LORD burned against them, and he left them. When the cloud lifted from above the Tent, there stood Miriam— leprous, like snow. Aaron turned toward her and saw that she had leprosy; and he said to Moses, "'Please, my lord, do not hold against us the sin we have so foolishly committed. Do not let her be like a stillborn infant coming from its mother’s womb with its flesh half eaten away.” Notice that because she wouldn't accept God’s spokesman nor Moses’ black wife, God wouldn't accept her. He left her.

When the early Christians showed prejudice, it hurt their fellowship. Galatians 2:11-14 says, “When Peter came to Antioch, I opposed him to his face, because he was clearly in the wrong. Before certain men came from James, he used to eat with the Gentiles. But when they arrived, he began to draw back and separate himself from the Gentiles because he was afraid of those who belonged to the circumcision group. The other Jews joined him in his hypocrisy, so that by their hypocrisy even Barnabas was led astray. When I saw that they were not acting in line with the truth of the gospel, I said to Peter in front of them all, "You are a Jew, yet you live like a Gentile and not like a Jew. How is it, then, that you force Gentiles to follow Jewish customs?” Many follow the crowd under the peer pressure of prejudice into sinful rebellion against God.

But rebellious prejudice not only stops fellowship, it hinders progress. Numbers 12:13-16 says, So Moses cried out to the LORD, 'O God, please heal her!' The LORD replied to Moses, 'If her father had spit in her face, would she not have been in disgrace for seven days? Confine her outside the camp for seven days; after that she can be brought back.' So Miriam was confined outside the camp for seven days, and the people did not move on till she was brought back. After that, the people left Hazeroth and encamped in the Desert of Paran.” How many times were people saved because Moses prayed for them? Notice: Miriam didn't like the black skinned woman so God gave Miriam skin as white as snow with leprosy. It's as if God had said, "Oh, you don't like black skin? Ok! You like white skin? Ok. I will give you very white skin!"

She had to wait 7 days before she could come back in. It's like God gave her a "time out." It held everyone up. How often is a church held up by one person’s rebellion? And how often is the cause prejudice against someone else?

It happened in the early church. Acts 6:1 says, “In those days when the number of disciples was increasing, the Grecian Jews among them complained against the Hebraic Jews because their widows were being overlooked in the daily distribution of food.” Their rapid growth came to a screeching halt because, as so often is the case, as the church grew to include different kinds of people, they began to fight with each other. Their prejudice against Grecian-Jews was exposed. But the Apostles quickly delegated power to those who were Grecian with Grecian names to make sure there was equality in the benevolence ministry.

After the prejudice problem was dealt with Acts 6:7 says, “So the word of God spread. The number of disciples in Jerusalem increased rapidly, and a large number of priests became obedient to the faith.” They were headed for rebellion and division in the church, but when the prejudice was dealt with, the harmony allowed them all to move forward in evangelism again.

Are you rebelling against one of God's leaders because of your prejudice against another culture, race, or person? Are you destroying the fellowship and hindering progress by showing favoritism? Such things are rebellion and will bring the judgment of God.

What kind of sick nation are we becoming?

Proverbs 16:29 "A violent man entices his neighbor and leads him down a path that is not good."

Teens Allegedly Beat Homeless Men
Aug 18 12:53 PM US/Eastern

Two homeless men were attacked with baseball bats and one of them critically injured, allegedly by teens inspired by videos of homeless people brawling that have sold hundreds of thousands of copies over the Internet.

The alleged attackers told officers they had recently seen the DVD "Bumfights" and wanted to do some "bum bashing" of their own, police Officer Jason Lee said.

The first victim told authorities he was attacked early Tuesday while sleeping on a sidewalk. About 90 minutes later, a private security guard saw two men beating another homeless man with a bat, police said.

William Orantes and Justin Brumfield, both 19, were arrested for investigation of attempted murder. Bail was set at $500,000 for each man.

One homeless man was treated and released after the attack, but the other, Ernest Adams, suffered severe head trauma and was in critical condition at Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center, Lee said.

More than 300,000 copies of the "Bumfights" DVDs were sold over the Internet, authorities said earlier this year. But its producers were charged with crimes related to the filmed fights, which the participants said they joined in exchange for money and alcohol.

Four men pleaded guilty in 2003 to misdemeanor conspiracy to stage illegal fights. Two later were jailed for six months because authorities said they did not perform their community service.

Adams was a well-known sight in downtown Los Angeles, acquaintances said. Leo Tolano, an outreach worker with the Downtown Center Business Improvement District, said transitional housing had been arranged for him but he refused to go because he feared the bad people he had spent time with in the past.

Robert Mallano, an associate justice on the U.S. Court of Appeals, said he saw Adams regularly while walking to work and would occasionally give him money even though Adams never asked for it.

"He would talk to people and smile. He was always polite and smiling," Mallano said. "I never saw him in a black mood or anything. He was always groomed. He had dignity."

"I read what happened to him in the paper, and I was just sick about it," Mallano said.

2 Timothy 3:1-5 "There will be terrible times in the last days. People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God— having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with them."

Dangerous Waters

Remember when the storm came along and scared the apostles (Mark 4:35-41) even though they were experienced sailors? Remember how Jesus was just sleeping through it like it was nothing? Why were they freaked out and Jesus could close his eyes and sleep with his head on a pillow?

Perhaps it was because Jesus had already spent time in prayer. Mark 1:35 says, "Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed." And the morning was not the only time Jesus prayed. He prayed in the evening. Matthew 14:23 "After he had dismissed them, he went up on a mountainside by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone." And He prayed all night sometimes. Luke 6:12 says, "One of those days Jesus went out to a mountainside to pray, and spent the night praying to God." Maybe if we prayed like Jesus we would have the faith to trust in God more.

Perhaps it was because Jesus was going to church each week to read God's word. Luke 4:16 says "He went to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, and on the Sabbath day he went into the synagogue, as was his custom." Perhaps if we were regularly spending time in worship and the study of God's word like Jesus did we wouldn't be so faithless in the face of fear. Romans 10:17 says, "Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word of Christ." What messages have you been listening to?

Jesus was constently encouraging the disciples to remember all the amazing things he did in the past to they can trust him in the future. In Matthew 16:9 Jesus says, "Do you still not understand? Don't you remember the five loaves for the five thousand, and how many basketfuls you gathered?" They didn't believe nor understand because they were not remembering all he had done in the past. In Mark 8:18 Jesus rebukes their fear of not having food by saying, "Do you have eyes but fail to see, and ears but fail to hear? And don't you remember?" Jesus wants us to remember. That is why he created the greatest memorial of all time. In Luke 22:19 it says, "And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, "This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me." We should take time regularly to meditate on all that God has done for us so we can remember to trust him for our future. We should be around the Lord's table each Sunday taking the bread and juice in remembrance of him. Perhaps if we obeyed this, we would trust him more.

We all face many dangers each day. We are constantly tempted. Ephesians 6:12 says, "For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms." We are surrounded by a heavenly realm of dark spiritual forces and powers. We are swimming with sharks. "Therefore put on the full armor of God" Paul says in Ephesians 6:13, "so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand."

When a person walks by faith in the Word of God which they constantly read, rests in the peace of a relationship they experience regularly in prayer, and remember all God has done in the past, they can rest through the storms of life rather than freak out.
