How Much Should A Christian Give To Their Church?

Give Proportionally

In the Bible the church was never funded by non-believers. The church was not funded by craft auctions or bake sales. The Church was funded by generous believers giving proportionally.

I am often asked, "How much should I give to the church?" Many times what people really mean is "How little can I give to the church and still be O.K. with God?" That is the wrong attitude. Our attitude should be, "How much more can I give to God because I want to give more?"

The Bible teaches that we should give proportionallly. Under the Old Law of Moses, everyone had to give 10%. The New Testament does not give a specific amount but it does say we should give proportionally. What proportion? If the New Covenant is better than the Old Law, shouldn't we give more? I know I do.

Give In Proportion To What You Have
2 Corinthians 8:12
“For if the willingness is there, the gift is acceptable according to what one has, not according to what he does not have.”

Give In Proportion To Your Income
1 Corinthians 16:2 “On the first day of every week, each one of you should set aside a sum of money in keeping with his income, saving it up, so that when I come no collections will have to be made.”

Give In Proportion To How Levites Were Paid (They recieved 10%)
1 Corinthians 9:13-14 “Don’t you know that those who work in the temple get their food from the temple, and those who serve at the altar share in what is offered on the altar? In the same way, the Lord has commanded that those who preach the gospel should receive their living from the gospel.”

Give In Proportion To Your Desired Harvest
2 Corinthians 9:62 “Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously.”
Proverbs 3:9-10 “Honor the LORD with your wealth, with the firstfruits of all your crops; then your barns will be filled to overflowing, and your vats will brim over with new wine.”

Give In Proportion To What You Will Need
2 Corinthians 9:8 “And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work.”
2 Corinthians 9:10 “Now he who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will also supply and increase your store of seed and will enlarge the harvest of your righteousness.”

Give In Proportion To Your Desired Blessing

Luke 6:38 “Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you."
Deuteronomy 15:10 “Give generously to him and do so without a grudging heart; then because of this the LORD your God will bless you in all your work and in everything you put your hand to.”

Give In Proportion To Your Willingness
2 Corinthians 9:7-8 “Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.”
2 Corinthians 8:11 “Now finish the work, so that your eager willingness to do it may be matched by your completion of it, according to your means.”
