Miraculous Signs Were Evidence

One of the evidences that the Bible is true is that the Word of the Apostles was confirmed by the miraculous signs that accompanied them.

Mark 16:20 says, "Then the disciples went out and preached everywhere, and the Lord worked with them and confirmed his word by the signs that accompanied it"

Notice that the purpose of the signs were to confirm the Word of Christ preached by his Apostles. These signs accompanied the Apostles just as Christ promised.

Acts 2:43 says “Everyone was filled with awe, and many wonders and miraculous signs were done by the apostles.” And Acts 5:12 says, “The apostles performed many miraculous signs and wonders among the people.”

In fact, these signs were the proof and evidence of their Apostleship. When Paul was defending the fact that he was an Apostle said the believers in 2 Corinthians 12:12, “The things that mark an apostle— signs, wonders and miracles— were done among you with great perseverance.”

So these miracles were signs, evidence, and proof of their apostleship, their inspiration by the Holy Spirit. And after they revealed God’s will to us the necessity of these super natural abilities ceased.

Paul predicted this in 1 Corinthians 13:8-10 “Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. For we know in part and we prophesy in part, but when maturity comes, the immature disappears.”

And that is why speaking in tongues have been stilled. That is why prophecies have ceased. There is no longer a need to provide supernatural evidence that someone is inspired because the Bible is complete and is not to be added to or taken away from. (see Revelation 22:18-19). Therefore the proof is already given. There is plenty of evidence that the Bible is true. The church has matured. Now that the Word of God is complete the need for prophets and signs and wonders to prove their inspiration is gone.

1 Corinthians 14:22 says, Tongues, then, are a sign, not for believers but for unbelievers.” The ability to speak in languages you never learned was a amazing miracle given to prove the inspiration of the Apostles. Now that the work of the Apostles and prophets in laying the foundation of the Bible is complete, the need for tongues has passed.

Jesus did say that there will be some signs in the last days: Matthew 24:24 says, "For false Christs and false prophets will appear and perform great signs and miracles to deceive even the elect— if that were possible."
